Alberta Consumers Spend The Most On Cannabis Annually

When it comes to Canadian cannabis consumers, not all provinces and territories are the same from the perspective of annual spending on regulated cannabis products. One province, Alberta, stands out from the rest.

“Albertans led the country in legal cannabis consumption by a substantial margin last year, with an average of $248 spent per person of legal age to buy it.” reported CBC in its local coverage. “The next closest province was Saskatchewan, at $205. Quebec saw the least in cannabis sales, at just $96 per person.”

The data was part of an article that examined falling alcohol product sales in Alberta and pondered whether the rise of legal cannabis sales was contributing to lower alcohol sales totals. At least one expert thinks the claim is unfounded.

“It might seem easy to connect the dots here and assume Albertans are drinking less because they’re consuming more cannabis instead, but it’s not quite so simple to draw a one-to-one connection between the two trends, says Michael Armstrong, a professor at Brock University’s Goodman School of Business, whose research has focused on this topic.” the article stated.

Health Canada recently released cannabis product purchase data for Q4 2024. A total of 24,644,265 units were sold through licensed Canadian retailers, and that includes both medical and recreational units. Canada’s government also found that the legal industry had 1,453,902 m2 of licensed indoor cultivation area, 364,925 m2 of licensed processing space, and 596 hectares of licensed outdoor cultivation space during Q4 2024.

“Statistics Canada released April retail sales for the country, with cannabis sales increasing from the March levels, up 5.7% to C$466.7 million.” New Cannabis Ventures reported about the most recently published monthly sales data (April 2025) from Canada’s legal market.
