The State of New York legalized cannabis for adult use in 2021, with the first legalized sales launching in December 2022. The first legal recreational cannabis purchase was made by Chris Alexander, Executive Director of New York’s Office of Cannabis Management.
New York’s Office of Cannabis Management recently released a report recapping noteworthy facts and statistics from the state’s cannabis industry during the 2024 calendar year. Below are some of the items of note from the report:
- Over 500 brands were sold in the market
- The market offered more than 1,500 strains, with none having more than 2% of market share
- Registered organizations account for 10% of all recreational sales, and 19% of flower sales specifically
- Total cannabis dispensaries nearly tripled in 2024, reaching 260 locations

As of April 2025, there were 368 licensed cannabis dispensaries in New York State, and total legal sales neared $1.5 billion.
