The State of Ohio has the seventh largest population among states in the U.S., making it one of the largest legal adult-use cannabis markets in the country. Ohio first legalized cannabis for medical use in 2016, with legal medical sales launching in 2019. Ohio later legalized cannabis for adult use in 2023, with the first legal recreational cannabis sales beginning in August 2024.
During the last year, Ohio’s regulated cannabis dispensaries have sold over $700 million worth of recreational cannabis products and generated a considerable amount of tax revenue for the state’s coffers in the process.
“This week marks one year since Ohio began selling recreational marijuana and sales totaled $702,587,948 with 109,706 pounds sold as of Tuesday, according to the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Cannabis Control.” reported Ohio Capital Journal in its local coverage.
“As of now, the state has collected over $122 million in tax revenue from recreational marijuana sales.” reported WBNS in its local coverage. “The Ohio Office of Budget and Management said it does not have a timeline for when the General Assembly may consider appropriating funds for disbursement to local governments.”
As of August 5th, 2025, Ohio regulators had licensed 159 cannabis dispensaries, according to the Ohio Department of Commerce. That is in addition to 37 licensed commercial cannabis cultivators, 46 processors, and 8 testing laboratories.
One thing that is unique about Ohio’s legal cannabis market compared to its legal state peers in the U.S. is that Ohio’s dispensaries sell units of cannabis flower that are 1/10th of an ounce. Other states typically sell units that are 1/8th of an ounce, although all legal states permit sales of units that are one gram.
According to the Ohio Department of Commerce, the average price for a gram of legal cannabis in Ohio right now is $6.63, and the average price for 1/10th of an ounce is $18.76. Ohio’s dispensaries also sell cannabis edibles, and according to industry data company Headset, edibles account for roughly 12.85% of legal product sales in Ohio.
Cannabis flower sales have a market share of roughly 53.6% in Ohio, vape pen products have a market share of about 27.1%, and concentrates have a market share of over 4%. Currently, 24 states in the U.S. have adopted adult-use cannabis legalization, and according to the advocacy group Marijuana Policy Project, “legalizing cannabis for adults has generated nearly $25 billion dollars in state tax revenue” since 2014.
