Researchers Find That CBD May Improve Acne Scarring

Researchers have determined that cannabidiol (CBD) “addressed multiple facets of acne pathophysiology and improved acne scarring overall” in a recent study. The study’s findings were published by Dermatology Times.

The team of investigators explored CBD’s reported anti-inflammatory and lipid-modulating properties by preparing “CBD at 6 different concentrations: 0.1, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 µM” and applying them to cells.

“The SEB-1 cell line, derived from human sebocytes and frequently referenced in acne-related research was utilized during this study, with researchers focusing on passage 28 of these cells.” the researchers stated about their methods.

“The SEB-1 cells were grown in a standard mixture including glucose, fetal bovine serum, and various additives like adenine, hydrocortisone, insulin, epidermal growth factor, and cholera toxin. For lipogenesis studies, they used a serum-free mixture of DMEM with glucose and antibiotics. Researchers wrote that the Detroit 551 cells were cultured in EMEM and DMEM with 10% fetal bovine serum at 37°C in a humid environment with 5% CO2, and the HaCaT cells were grown in DMEM with fetal calf serum, glutamine, and penicillin under similar conditions.” the researchers also stated about their methods.

The SEB-1 cells were treated with the different prepared CBD concentrations and cultured for 24 hour, 48 hour, and 72 hour periods. Researchers added 10 µl of CCK8 solution after each incubation period.

“Overall, they concluded that CBD offers a multifaceted approach to managing acne by targeting inflammation, lipid production, and potentially improving skin healing post-inflammation, suggesting it could be a valuable addition to acne treatment strategies.” the researchers determined according to Dermatology Times.

The study did not determine which CBD delivery method is best for treating acne and acne scarring, however, researchers applied the differing concentrations of CBD directly to cells, and that may suggest that CBD topicals could be an effective delivery method.

Persistence Market Research conducted an analysis in late 2023, looking specifically at the potential trajectory of the global CBD skin care market between the period of 2022 and 2030.

“The projected trajectory of the global CBD Skin Care market indicates a robust growth rate, with a forecasted Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 22.1%. This anticipated expansion is poised to propel the market from its estimated value of US$3.4 billion in 2023 to an impressive US$14 billion by the conclusion of the year 2030.” Persistence Market Research stated in a press release.

“Factors contributing to this growth include the increasing awareness of CBD’s skincare benefits, changing consumer preferences towards natural ingredients, and the expanding legalization of cannabis-derived products in various regions.” Persistence Market Research also stated.

“The market appeals to a diverse consumer base, including individuals seeking natural remedies for skin conditions, anti-aging solutions, and those interested in sustainable and cruelty-free products.” the press release also stated.
